Having finished the novel The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman, I have to say, I'm in love. :) This novel rocks! It's now one of my favorites, below, obviously, Virginia Woolf and Michael Moorcock, but it is. Aside from Meg Cabot, Tamora Pierce and C.S. Lewis's stuff, this is the most fun/imaginative YA novel I've read in a long time. :) Sure, it's serious, but . . . If a book doesn't make you think, what good is it? ;) The Golden Compass is clever, it's adventurous and warm, and it's intelligent. It's not just a good read for kids, but for adults (like me) too. Sure there's controversy--and I find it to be unfair controversary (for wasn't James Joyce considered controversial? And John Steinbeck? Anais Nin? and even Thomas Paine?)--but controversy can be a good thing if it gets people to read a book. And reading is a good thing, people! To paraphrase Indiana Jones's father: "[People]... should read books instead of burning them." And though I was excited to see the movie, I have to say I agreed with the hesitant fans, wondering how much the book would be butchered,... and for all that I found it delightful, I think the fans were right to worry, sadly! (full review coming soon) Anyway, here's a few interesting goodies I've found to wile away the time until I can get my full review up, and see the movie, and review it, no doubt, asap. Enjoy!
