Skeptics

This is going to shock our visitors, I'm sure, but... by nature, I am Skeptic. Though obviously there are things I can't claim to be a Skeptic about, and though, I like to read the stories and novels of Anne Rice, while I know something of modern witches and pagans, and while I sometimes find a good story of vampires, witches, ghosts and goblins to be just the thing, and I do enjoy a good Halloween haunted house, I do lean more toward the view of the Skeptics when it comes to astrology, divination, "true" stories of vampires, hauntings, the Loch Ness monster, Big Foot, psychic ability, or UFOs. I want hard proof, Scientific before I'll believe things like this actually exist, and right now, there's little to no substantial proof to any of it. I don't begrudge anyone their right to believe in things like that, that's their choice. But I personally lean more towards the Skeptics' view of these topics; they make sense as a plot point in fiction and movies ... but real life? I'm not at all so sure; the jury's out; there's no real proof yet, but if we see it one day, maybe?

So, I'm very skeptical about them. TV shows like Supernatural, Charmed and Ghost Whisperer, movies like Blair Witch Project, Poltergiest, Interview with the Vampire, and Underworld, and the like are just stories, no matter how much we may enjoy them, there still stories, fiction, no more, no less.

UFO's
The hot paranormal topic. No, folks. I've seen too many pie-plate photos, and read about too many little gray men, and phony wide-eyed abduction tales to believe in this subject.

Next.

Big Foot, Chubacabra, Loch Ness
Again, too many fakey-photos and unsubstantiated wide-eyed tales exist to make me believe in these things. Either guys in suits, guys with too much money to spend on props or irrational explanations for something totally natural in every aspect.

Next.

Psychics
While it would be nice to be able to predict ones own future, I've never seen anyone actually hit the mark here. Too many vague, shifty details go into their work--how they use the sitter's reactions to make their predictions, among the various other ways they have of trumping up their cases. Sorry. I don't buy into it.

Next.

Divination
This is a sticky subject, but I will say, no. No, I can't say I believe in this. There's simply no substantiated proof that any form of divination can really work. Until there is, I will remain skeptic, on this point.

Next.

spectral photography/chain rattlers and other poltergeists
My feelings here are the same as with Big Foot, Chubacabra, and Loch Ness. It's just so easy to fake supposed ghostly/Nessie photos that I don't really believe in the (so to speak) physical appearance of these creatures/beings/entities.

Next.

Astral Projection

No, I don't think this is possible either. I think, in my opinion, the occurance that is called "projection" is really just a misnomer for dreams or imagination. And while both can seem incredibly strong, I seriously doubt it has the kind of power to physically/mentally/psychically drop you into another place.

Next.

Faeries, Vampires, Werewolves, dragons.
Fanciful. While it would be nice to believe, evidence says otherwise. I don't believe they have an existence outside fiction, poetry, movies.

Next.

Spirits and Angels
Hmmm... I'll break with the topic here and say a big maybe. While, as mentioned above, I don't believe the existence of these entities can ever be scientifically proven, and I *don't* believe they ever physically cross into our time-space plane (IE. I don't believe Aunty Meredith is going to push you out of the path of a train), I'm not actually willing to completely rule out their existence, yet.

Next.

God/gods/goddesses/saints
The biggie. Another big maybe. They've been too long in the collective unconcious to totally discount their reality, at least on some level. But to say they've truly made miraculous appearances on everything from shoe leather to cereal bowls to farmsteads is... a little far-fetched for me.

I could go on, (for instance, see my "Skeptics: Astrology" page), but as you see, nope. We don't believe in... the strange and paranormal. Not for a second...but it can make for good storytelling, and that, after all, is a very good thing. :)

Notes:
Chubacabra is this small, coyote-like thing that may or may not be supernatural. A good explanation of it may be found at Mystical Universe Chupacabra
