Amazons in Ancient History and
Literature:The Amazons, mythologized ancient warrior women who were dedicated to Artemis, and plagued Greek troops. They were even proported to steal Greek men, in order to father Amazonian children. They were a severe thorn in the sides of many Greek warriors, and according to Homer, particularly during the Trojan War, where they served to give Achilles and company a massive headache.
Other sources (Xenophon, Herodotus) say these formidible warriors were acutally to be found throughout the ancient world, from Greece, to Libya, to Thrace, and even, thanks to recent research, we know they may have truly roamed, among other places, the Eurasian Steppes.
One can even surmise that these ancient women warriors might have served as a tantilizing model to later female warriors, such as the formidable Boudicca and Cartimandua.
But the truth of women like Pentheselia and Hippolyte is still being debated, and if luck has it (*we hope we hope*), they may turn out to be a reality greater than fiction. Until then, we can continue to dream of the warrior women of old. And that is never a bad thing. :)
