Victorian Christmas

The Victorians knew how to do everything with a certain charm unparalleled by later times. So too, their Christmas celebrations. :) It was the youth of the Industrial age, and manufacture was moving from the home to the factory; while a few could afford the lavish lifestyle and festivities later celebrated and ridiculed in the media and arts, the poor still had to scrape for their living (just give a glance to any of the works by Charles Dickens, to see the disparity between the classes). However, it was the upperclasses, under the influence of Victoria, who left their mark on the holiday season, shaping it into the flurry of festivities we now model ours upon, year after year. The celebrations of the Victorians are everywhere recounted, none better than in Dickens's A Christmas Carol.
Here, though, is not the fiction, but a few articles to give a good picture of just how this lavish time of year was really celebrated, under the influence, and in the years of, Queen Victoria (1837-1901).
